The New European Bauhaus (NEB)

The ‘New European Bauhaus’ initiative launched by Ursula von der Leyen in 2020 focuses on the values of sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion. The aim is to change the way we construct buildings by 2040. Research, innovation and culture play a major role in this. The European Green Deal is to be supported by innovative ideas and concepts. It aims to build a bridge between science, technology, art and culture.
The NEB brings together experts, companies, institutions and civil society players in the fields of housing, construction, culture, social coexistence and art in order to rethink sustainable living in Europe and beyond.

Objectives:

Improve quality of life Strengthen inclusion

The European Bauhaus Compass is a guidance framework for decision-makers and project promoters who want to apply the principles and criteria of NEB to their activities.
The Compass suggests directions for the development of NEB projects and lays the foundation for more detailed assessment tools. The NEB Compass describes the three core values of the initiative and shows how a project can become a true NEB.

Compass:

Illustrates what ‘beautiful’, ‘sustainable’ and ‘inclusive’ mean on three levels of aspiration.
Extending the three core principles that define the NEB's way of working: participatory process, multi-level engagement and a transdisciplinary approach.
Focus on the ability to test and promote new visions and processes with a long-term vision.
Focus on existing theories and models, but remain open to developments in line with the experimental nature of the initiative.
